Some key achievements as Dean

  • Spearheaded new problem-based, interdisciplinary medical curriculum

  • Created new Graduate Entry Medical Programme

  • Created new Bachelor of Health Sciences degree and initiated new Clinical Associates degree

  • Created SA’s first university owned research company - Wits Health Consortium- as integral to new research and funding strategy

  • Established SA’s first University-owned private teaching hospital - Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre - as integral to re-thinking post-graduate specialist medical education. Raised over R130 million for new initiatives in the Faculty of Health Sciences

  • Established new academic programmes in rural health, bioethics, sports medicine, emergency medicine, biomedical sciences

  • Drove a series of transformation initiatives, including a submission on behalf of the medical school to the national Truth and Reconciliation Commission and conducting an Internal Reconciliation Commission for past students and staff
